Guns and Howitzers
of the
1/83rd Artillery

In some cases you will see that there were a lot of names considering there were only 4 guns in each Battery. This happened in 1970 and probably other years as well. Malcolm Decker (69-70) explains how that happened...

" C Battery was always changing guns. At one time we were all 8 inch another all 175. Usually (2) 8 inch and (2) 175. But in January 1970 C battery and A battery changed fire bases and exchanged guns. In other words the guns stayed in place and the batteries moved."

When the 1/83rd first was reformed at Ft Sill in early 1966 we were entirely 8-inch towed.  We soon changed to all 8-inch Self-Propelled. When we arrived in Vietnam it was not uncommon for guns to rotate between being configured as 8-inch or 175mm.  This was possible because both were on the same gun carriage.
